Boreal Education

News: Boreal announces its first partnership with the University of New Brunswick to expand access to high-quality online education

Independent Board Director

Let’s reimagine access to Canadian education, together.

Boreal Education partners with Canadian public universities and colleges to design, launch, and grow online programs for modern learners. We are Canada’s first domestic Online Program Management (OPM) company, built from the ground up for the regulatory, cultural, and institutional realities of Canadian post-secondary education.

Our model draws on global frameworks that have scaled internationally, adapted specifically for the Canadian market. Universities and colleges retain full academic control and credentialing while Boreal provides capital, marketing, enrolment infrastructure, and student success operations through long-term partnerships.

Our purpose is to expand access to leading education for all learners in Canada, including those in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across the country. We believe that Canadian post-secondary institutions are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of the future of work, and we exist to help them reach more learners and transform communities along the way.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are adding an independent director to our Board of Directors. We are looking for someone whose experience, judgment, and network can strengthen Boreal at a formative stage of the company’s growth.

This seat is designed to bring a complementary perspective from someone who has operated at senior levels of academic leadership and can bring that experience to bear as Boreal deepens its partnerships and expands its program portfolio. You will have meaningful input on the strategic direction of the company and a real hand in where Boreal goes next.

What You Will Do

  • Attend quarterly board meetings and come prepared to engage on strategy, risk, and operational performance.
  • Provide advice and perspective between meetings as questions arise. Our leadership team values directors who are accessible and willing to think through problems in real time.
  • Advocate for Boreal within your professional network when appropriate, making introductions and lending credibility as the company grows its institutional partnerships.
  • Contribute to discussions on program strategy, institutional partnerships, academic quality, and market positioning, drawing on your experience in Canadian post-secondary education.
  • Support the company’s governance development as we grow, helping us build the right structures at the right time without overbuilding for our current stage.

What You Bring

  • Senior academic or administrative leadership experience. You’ve been in the room where institutional decisions get made. You understand how Canadian post-secondary works, what institutions need to thrive, and what gets in the way. You bring the credibility and judgment that comes from this experience.
  • Comfort operating in a small, fast-moving company. We are an early-stage team with a growth mandate. We need someone who brings good judgment and asks the right questions, not someone whose instinct is to build process before building the business.
  • Independence from Boreal’s current directors, partners, and operations. This seat is designed to bring a genuinely new perspective to the board.
  • Canadian residency and availability for meetings across Canadian time zones.

The following are valued but not required:

  • Experience with online, distance, or professional education programming
  • Familiarity with provincial or federal post-secondary policy, workforce development, or skills strategy (active participation in national or provincial higher education sector organizations is an asset)
  • Previous board or advisory service with a private company, non-profit, or public body (ICD.D designation or equivalent governance training is an asset)

We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity in all aspects of our work, including the composition of our board and the design of the programs we help bring to market.

We look forward to finding a director who shares our commitment to Canadian post-secondary education and wants to help us expand access to high-quality programs for learners across the country. If this opportunity resonates with you, we would welcome the chance to connect.
